Each year in late August, thousands of Tree Swallows gather at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge to feed before continuing their migration to wintering grounds throughout the southern United States and Central America. Join the Friends of Parker River NWR for an evening at Hellcat Wildlife Observation Area to witness this incredible natural phenomenon.
Teacher/naturalists led by Bill Getter from the Friends will help you spot the swallows and share insight into their behavior. They'll also help point out the many other bird species often present at this time of year, including Great and Snowy Egrets, several species of ducks, and shorebirds.
This program is open to participants of all ages — families are encouraged to join! If conditions are good, we may linger past sunset to listen for the calls of Whip-poor-wills.
