This spring, the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is proud to host a special group exhibition in our Visitor Center gallery. "Birds Near and Far" brings together the distinct perspectives of five photographers—David Ammerman, Dean Baumeister, Jerry Chen, Richard Goldenberg, and Bob Groskin—who are united by their friendship and a shared passion for avian life.
About the Artists
Known collectively as The G5 Avian Photographers, this group formed after meeting through their shared hobby in the field. Their diverse backgrounds bring a unique depth to this collection:
David Ammerman: A familiar face at the refuge, David leads bird walks and educational talks. For him, photography is an essential tool that supports and documents his lifelong birding activities.
Dean Baumeister: With twenty-five years of experience behind the lens, Dean’s journey began at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary and has evolved into a masterful study of local species.
Jerry Chen: A former professional photographer from Seattle, Jerry transitioned his career-honed skills to the world of birding after moving to Massachusetts during the pandemic.
Richard Goldenberg: After retiring in 2023, Richard found a new calling roaming the woods and wetlands, turning a nascent hobby into the striking work seen in this show.
Bob Groskin: As a retired avian veterinarian, Bob spent his professional life caring for wild, zoo, and companion birds. Today, he continues that devotion by capturing the spirit of his former patients through the camera lens.
