Wildlife photography demands everything the human eye is designed to do well: motion tracking, sharp central focus, and precise color interpretation. But what happens when that biology is broken?
We’re excited to welcome local photographer Kevin Komiega back as our Friends of Parker River Wildlife Refuge Artist of the Month. His featured exhibit, Field Guide: Rods & Cones, is more than a collection of coastal wildlife; it is a story of adapting to a world seen through an imperfect lens.
A Journey Back to the Arts
In 1999, a traumatic injury changed Kevin’s vision forever. For years, he stepped away from his artistic roots, believing his eyes could no longer be trusted. It wasn't until he found the quiet trails of Plum Island and the wild edges of the Massachusetts coast that he began to see a new path forward.
Since capturing his first Snowy Owl in 2013, Kevin hasn't put the camera down. From the salt marshes of Parker River to the shores of Salisbury Beach and beyond, his work explores the wild edges not just of the land, but of perception itself.
Why You Should Visit:
A Unique Perspective: Experience wildlife through a lens that embraces "imperfect" biology.
The Power of B&W: See how Kevin uses monochrome to navigate light and motion when color fails to tell the whole story.
Local Wildlife: Celebrate the birds and landscapes of the Great Marsh through the eyes of a neighbor who found himself again on these very trails.
Exhibit Details:
Location: Parker River National Wildlife Refuge HQ, 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, Massachusetts 01950
Now through March 31, 2026
Admission: Free
