Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is delighted to feature the work of Michael Watkins as our Featured Artist of the Month for June and July 2026.
A lifelong photographer, Watkins’ work reveals the intricate patterns and profound relationships found within the natural world. His photographs capture nature across the shifting seasons, blending intimate close-up details with expansive, broader views of flora and fauna.
While some of his photographs lean toward abstraction—allowing natural textures and geometric patterns to stand entirely on their own—others beautifully celebrate the direct, living connections between the plants and animals of our world.
About the Artist
Michael Watkins studied his craft at the prestigious Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and at the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine.
Embracing both modern technology and traditional methods, Watkins works in a diverse variety of formats. His toolset includes everything from an iPhone and digital SLR (DSLR) to classic 35mm and medium-format film.
What sets Watkins' work apart is his commitment to authenticity. His photographs are never digitally manipulated or artificially constructed; instead, they are purely "found" moments, brought to life through patient, careful observation and a lifetime of experience behind the lens.
