Many birdwatchers dismiss sparrows as "little brown things." And it's true: many sparrows are relatively small, most are brown, and they can be genuinely difficult to identify. But take a closer look and sparrows turn out to be remarkable birds — a wide variety of sizes, beautiful plumages, and distinctive behaviors all their own.
Join the Friends of Parker River NWR for Sparrows of New England, a Zoom workshop with Bill Gette of Celebrating Nature. After this illustrated lecture, you'll be convinced that sparrows deserve your careful attention.

Bill will review 19 species of sparrows, including:Year-round residents that breed in New EnglandSparrows that migrate into our area in fall and overwinter hereRarities that turn up here only occasionally.
Along the way he'll cover sparrow taxonomy and nomenclature, walk through aids to field identification, and share plenty more besides. The timing is ideal — fall is when our sparrow diversity peaks.
