The 2023 piping plover season was a year defined by collaboration. Across Massachusetts, conservationists, volunteers, and agencies worked together to ensure a successful nesting season for these threatened birds. At Parker River, our team was proud to be part of this statewide effort.
With over 25 pairs of plovers calling our beaches home, we worked tirelessly to monitor nests, install protective measures, and educate the public on the importance of respecting closed areas. While challenges from weather and predation are a constant, the collective effort across the state proved successful.
This year highlighted the vital role that community plays in conservation. The data collected from the Parker River Refuge, along with sites across the state, showed a positive trend for the piping plover population, demonstrating that our collaborative approach is working.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our volunteers and members. It is your passion and support that make this work possible. Together, we are ensuring a brighter future for the Piping Plover and all the species that call the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge home.
