Fresh off the annual swallow spectacle at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, the Friends invite you to spend a morning with the birds behind the show. Filmmaker Michael Hoel joins us at the Visitor Center Auditorium to present his documentary Tree Swallows, Tiny Superheroes — a film three years in the making, and especially apropos after this season's gathering at the refuge. Michael is a long-time resident of the Great Marsh, a graphic artist, and an avid wildlife photographer and videographer whose films have been presented at venues all around New England.
The Story Behind the Film
In Michael's own words:
"About 15 years ago I created a small tree swallow colony by placing 8 boxes around a panne area in the salt marsh in back of where I live. I greatly enjoyed visiting and maintaining this colony through the years, and after I retired I decided to produce a movie of the Tree Swallow's life history. So I spent 3 years filming and studying the colony, and the result is my movie Tree Swallows, Tiny Superheroes. The movie covers their entire life history, and it includes situations and behavior that has rarely, if ever, been presented."
"Every year I look forward to the massing of the swallows on the PRNWR and it always brings back wonderful memories of the hundreds of hours I spent watching and learning from these wonderful creatures when I worked on the movie. Because of my long personal history with the PRNWR I would like to share this film with other people that are as enthralled with this wonderful bird as I am."
